A Town Like No Other: Your Guide to Exploring Fort Worth

For regular readers of our journal, you already know Fort Worth holds a special place in my heart. It’s not just because it’s a short 15-minute drive from home, but rather the city itself—the ambiance, the old west vibe, the welcoming locals, and even the ease of finding parking.

My wife and I have enjoyed countless dinners, comedy shows, events, and attractions here. Over the past 20+ years, I’ve visited so frequently, both casually and for photography, that I’ve lost count. While I know there are still places I haven’t experienced, I’ve seen enough to confidently create this Fort Worth Visitor Guide for anyone wanting to explore this one-of-a-kind Texas city..

If there’s one place to start, it’s Sundance Square. Situated in the heart of downtown Fort Worth, this lively area boasts beautiful architecture and a central plaza perfect for unwinding outdoors. You’ll also have a prime view of the iconic Tarrant County Courthouse, an architectural masterpiece.

Sundance Square is surrounded by fantastic dining options, shops, and entertainment venues. It’s within walking distance of Bass Performance Hall, where the arts take center stage, and Scat Jazz Lounge, where you can experience the timeless allure of jazz. The square frequently hosts events, from outdoor movie nights to holiday celebrations, making it a year-round attraction.

Best Time to Visit: Anytime!

The Stockyards embody the city’s western heritage. This historic district is a must-visit for anyone coming to Fort Worth. Once a bustling livestock trading post, it’s now a vibrant area filled with boutique shopping, delicious dining, and plenty of attractions.

The highlight? The cattle drives that take place twice daily (weekends), showcasing Texas Longhorns and the cowboy spirit of yesteryear. During the holidays, the Stockyards transform with festive decorations, making it an especially magical place. Whether it’s the history or the ambiance, the Stockyards are pure Fort Worth.

Best Time to Visit: Year-round, but warmer months and Christmastime are especially great.

Despite the name, Panther Island isn’t actually an island, but a vibrant hub along the Trinity River. It’s part of the extensive Trinity Trails system, offering miles of scenic walking and biking paths with striking city views.

This improv comedy troupe is Fort Worth’s answer to “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” With audience participation as a key element, every show is unique and hilarious. I’ve been multiple times, most recently with my college-age son, and we left with aching sides from laughing so hard. The performance is clean fun, even though you must be eighteen years or older to attend. Pro tip: Take a spouse or a date and sit in the sofa near stage left.

Best Time to Visit: Friday and Saturday evenings.
