Wortham, Texas

– From Railroads to Oil Booms.

Wortham, Texas, a small but historically rich town in Freestone County, came into existence in the 1870s. It was named after Colonel Luther Wortham, a merchant instrumental in securing railway for area. Situated in a prime location for westward settlers, the town soon became a popular stop. Wortham’s initial growth was driven by agriculture, with farmers taking advantage of the fertile land surrounding the area.

Early History and Growth

in 1871, when Houston & Texas Central Railway was planned through the area, R. B. Longbotham sold right of way through his land for token sum of $5, and townsite was bought from him by investors. This boosted the town’s economy, transforming it into a vital hub for local cotton and livestock trade. Businesses sprang up, and Wortham’s population grew quickly. By the early 20th century, it had cemented its place as a bustling small town, with local businesses flourishing and a strong community spirit taking root.

Interesting Facts

In the 1920s, Wortham briefly enjoyed a massive influx of wealth and population thanks to an unexpected oil boom.  A Thanksgiving Day gusher in 1924 opened the boom. Population leaped from 1,000 to over 30,000 at once. Rumors of oil attracted such prospectors as hotel man Conrad Hilton, who soon left when wells yielded salt water. Unfortunately, the boom was short-lived, and after the oil ran dry, Wortham returned to its agricultural roots. Nevertheless, the town’s brush with the oil industry remains a fascinating chapter in its history.

Present Day Wortham

With a population of about 1,000, Wortham today is a peaceful community that stands as a testament to Texas’ rich and varied past. Visitors are drawn to its small-town charm, historic landmarks, and tranquil lifestyle. While its booming days may be behind it, Wortham retains the character and charm that have shaped it over the last century.
