First Light
– Tranquility at Bowman Branch.
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. – Genesis 1
Embarking on a photographic journey often brings us closer to the hidden wonders of nature, allowing us to preserve moments that hold lasting significance. One serene spring morning in early April, I found myself captivated by the beauty of Bowman Branch Creek, a small waterway flowing gently into Joe Pool Lake in Texas. With the morning sun casting a soft glow over the scene, I was inspired to photograph the creek and its waterfall. Spring’s fresh greenery intertwined with lingering autumn hues, creating a scene that far surpassed my expectations. Using a process called focus stacking, I was able to create one of my favorite compositions to date.
The Appeal of Bowman Branch Creek
Tucked in the heart of Texas, Bowman Branch Creek offers a peaceful retreat from the rush of daily life. Though modest in size, the creek holds a quiet charm, inviting nature lovers, anglers, and photographers to explore its scenic beauty. Its gentle flow and tranquil surroundings create a perfect setting for an intimate, natural composition.
Embracing the Glow of Morning Light
As the spring morning unfolded, the first sunlight gently illuminated the landscape, casting a soft, enchanting light at the back of the scene The interplay of light and shadow added depth, bringing out the details of new spring leaves mingling with autumn’s last colors. It was a chance to capture the season’s subtle shift in color, light, and atmosphere.
Creating a Harmony of Seasons
In this unique setting, I aimed to compose an image that balanced the vibrant elements of spring with the warmth of autumn’s last touch. Positioning myself to capture the creek’s gentle curves and the flow of the small waterfall, I used techniques like the rule of thirds and leading lines to draw the viewer’s eye through the image. I wanted to evoke a feeling of peace and natural beauty that would resonate with those who saw it.
The Technique of Focus Stacking
Using focus stacking, I could enhance the image’s depth and clarity by capturing multiple shots at different focal points and blending them during post-processing. This approach brought out details that a single shot would struggle to capture—revealing each leaf’s texture, the sparkle of water droplets, and the intricate patterns in the creek’s surroundings.

With each frame, I sought to highlight the scene’s delicate textures and colors. The final composition revealed the creek’s gentle ripples, the cascading waterfall, and the interplay of vivid green leaves with lingering autumn warmth. The harmony of seasons, highlighted by the tender morning light, created an image that felt truly captivating.
Photographing Bowman Branch Creek on that cool spring morning became a transformative experience. Blending focus stacking with the changing seasons allowed me to capture the scene’s intricate beauty and textures. This experience reinforced the powerful ability of photography to capture nature’s remarkable details, and it remains one of my most cherished compositions.
