The Great Robbery and Fire of 1901
In 1901, the town of Jasper faced a significant setback that would alter its course. The town was the target of a bold robbery during which thieves blew open the post office safe and the county treasurer’s safe. In their escape, the criminals set a fire, and with no fire department in place, the flames rapidly engulfed the town, resulting in catastrophic destruction. Damages were estimated at $100,000, and the contents stolen from the safes were never recovered. The thieves successfully escaped, leaving the town reeling from the loss.
